CeBIT: navigation software for iPhone

One of the problems regarding iPhone is that it cannot really be used for car navigation. This has been quite evident in the case of the first-generation model, as it had no GPS receiver, but iPhone 3G should be capable of doing such a task. Apple, however, didn't prefer anyone to develop a car naviagtion software for the renowned device, although they gave no reason for that.

We were really surprised to see an iPhone 2G at the stand of Sygic, which had the Sygic Mobile 2009 navigation software running on it. We have asked the company's PR manager who has told us that they are already negotiating with Apple about launching the software in the AppStore - so we weren't told anything specific, currently it is possible that the American manufacturer will filter out the application. Next we have asked how is iPhone 2G capable of navigation. We have been told - although it's hard to believe - that the handset can be connected to an external GPS receiver via Bluetooth. We have never heard such a thing before.

The software hasn't been very convincing. Basically our problem is that it doesn't support the multi-touch display, so we can only zoom with the slider on the side, but aside from that it's quite good. For us it was very important that in the European map pack, covering 44 countries, our region is also included. This will theoretically be available for 79 euros in AppStore, or as a stand-alone product. The latter includes a DVD and a microSD card with adapters, the disc has the maps, the sound files and the update application. The application also runs on the touchscreen version of Symbian Series 60.
