BlackBerry won't become open-source

Open-source software is becoming increasingly popular these days, meaning that a companies release not only a developers' kit, but the source code of the whole operating system. The whole thing began with Google's Android platform, which seems to be followed by Symbian acquired by Nokia - to be more precise the largest companies of the mobile industry are planning to create a uniform and open operating system through Symbian Foundation and the source code will be open for developers. Microsoft has previously pointed out that they are not planning to make Windows Mobile open or free. According to EE|Times RIM has the same opinion about the BlackBerry operating system. Cassidy Gentle, lead software engineer at RIM, asys that his company is planning to open Exlipse or Java Mobile Tools, but the API and the operating system probably won't become open-source.
