Nokia N97 - it will be great a bit later

We should first look at the calendar from all office applications. There are no changes here, we have a pleasant application, this has a widget extension as well, which can display upcoming events on the main screen. Using Nokia Mail for Exchange the phone can synchronize “over the air” with our office server, so it basically has all the features we could expect from a calendar. I personally had no problems with the alarm clock, although some users have said that it seems that the alarm go off five minutes before it should, but since all of my morning wake-ups like if I was to climb out from the bottom of a grave, I wouldn’t even notice such a difference.

It’s a sad fact that we only get a read only version of the QuickOffice suite, which is used for handling Office files, so if we’d like to edit our documents, we need to purchase the full version. It’s a pity since N97 – given its design and structure – is a great tool for such tasks. There are no problems with Zip and PDF file support, we also have the so-called active notes, which are used for drawing something on the display, type something, attach an image and then we can pack up the whole thing and send it in an email or via Bluetooth.

The calculator has only basic functions by default (those who need a better one can get it from OVI), the voice recorded could have been one that records an infinite amount of sounds, but it’s limited to one hour, although we can record the ongoing call as well. The converter converts and the using the search tool we can look around all information on the phone, it’s a nice little app.

The built-in GPS module locates us approximately very quickly by using cell info, but we have to wait long minutes for the satellite connection. I’ve tried it when the phone was open, hoping that it helps, but it didn’t. There is a compass on the phone as well, but no applications make use of it currently. The pre-installed Nokia Maps software can be used with the usual limitations: we can load tons of maps for offline navigation from our PC, but if we don’t do that it connects to the internet, and if we’d like to have voice navigation, we have to pay for it. Garmin XT runs on N97, but we have to buy that too and it might worth it, as although the Navteq maps (owned by Nokia) have evolved a lot, Garmin’s TopMap database is still much better. Theoretically we could use Sygic as well, but we shouldn’t waste our time, due to the TeleAtlas maps.

By default there was a single game on the phone we had, this is Guitar Rock Tour from Gameloft. It is of course the mobile version of Guitar Hero, I think we shouldn’t talk a lot about it. It’s strange that N97 doesn’t have official N-Gage support. We were told that it is coming, we can still play around until then, but we don’t really recommend this. By the way, a Skype client was also promised earlier, but this is missing, even though the representatives told us that it’s coming. So be it.
