HTC Hero - hey, this is the future!

Exterior

The handset doesn’t bring much new, but it uses some stuff from the manufacturer’s first Android handset, G1. You can see the break line on the bottom, the area below the display is a bit inclined upwards, which provides a really comfortable access to the main controls, not mentioning the fact that if we put the phone upside down, it won’t get scratches on the screen. By the way it has a nice size (112 x 56.2 x 14.4 mm) and it’s a bit heavy (135 grams) gadget, but the materials used give no reason for this bonus weight, as there’s no metal here at all; the back panel and the sides are made of white, matte plastic, while the frame around the display is metallic-looking plastic. I wouldn’t say that assembly quality is the best I’ve ever seen, we can force the Hero to crack and screech if we press it hard.

On the top of the front panel we can see the large speaker, while right below that there is the 3.2”, 320 x 480 pixels large capacitive multi-touch display. It uses TFT technology, can display 65,000 colors and has a great quality, the only problematic part is its brightness, which could be higher, as it’s not very easy to read the screen in powerful sunlight. The controls are on the bottom and are split into two parts: the metallic part has four buttons (call handling keys, home and menu), while on the bottom there is the trackball and two other buttons (back and search).

The back panel is very plain, but it’s interesting that the break point is not that hard, which provides a special design to the otherwise completely white part, which has only three holes: on the top there is the lens of the 5 megapixel autofocus camera and the handsfree speaker, while on the bottom we can see the hook for attaching the wristband. In the center there is the label promoting the photo qualities and also the manufacturer’s logo – we won’t see any Google logos, this is the first Android phone from HTC that lacks it.

On the top there is the 3.5 mm headset jack – finally – and the gap used for taking off the back panel, while on the bottom we can see the HTC ExtUSB connector and the microphone and on the left there are the huge volume control keys.
