Nokia has recently made an offer to buy Symbian, which has been accepted immediately by most, so if the acquisition has no other legal blocks, the fate of the operating system can soon be in the hands of the Finnish manufacturer. Along with the acquisition the large manufacturers have announced the estabilishment of Symbian Foundation, which has the (partial) goal of creating an open user interface, which evidently means the end of Series 60, UIQ and MOAP platforms as separate beings. UIQ Technology has already announced to decrease the number of employees from 375 to 175, meaning that half of the emplyees get sacked. On an ironical sidenote, one of the owners of UIQ is Motorola, who is also going through a difficult period.
