It looks like the Japanese are not satisfied with the QR Code (square-shaped barcodes), which contains up to a few thousand of characters of encrypted information and can be captured / decrypted by mobile phones. The company Design QR has created a Double QR: they simply inserted another QR code into another one. Now it has double the storage space to keep 2x more information. The company plans to even further expand the capacity by integrating more QR codes together.
This type of code has already become one of the popular tools for mobile phones in Japan. It provides information and also lets mobile phone users purchase products using the QR code. Nowadays more and more European models have this feature and lots of home-printable online tickets (like train tickets) are assigned such a code.
