Sharp cares a lot about creating alternative fuel cells that are much more environment-friendly. Its new, methanol-bsaed solutions are capable of creating 0.3 watts of energy per one cc, which is a world record. Thanks to the new DMFC (Direct Methanol Fuel Cells) technology, chemical energy can be converted into electric energy at a smaller size, but still in an effective manner, which makes possible the creation of cells with a size similar to the ones used nowadays, but with a much longer uptime. "Mini power plants", based on the interaction of oxygen and hidrogen, mean a lot less burden for the environment. DMFC energy cells have a very simple structure, they get the necessary oxygen from the environment, but they are still more effective at producing electric energy, and they even recharge very fast. In the future the size of the cells can be further decreased, which might make the technology a direct competitot of lithium batteries.
