Samsung Innov8 blog: part two

We now continue our blog series presenting the prototype of Samsung i8510 Innov8. There haven't been too many questions about the handset, much less than in the case of Omnia, so I would like to attract everyone's attention that you can ask any kind of question in the forum and I will answer them in the next blog post!

First of all I'd like to write a few words about the handset's exteior and quality. As you probably all know the phone is not small, it weighs 140 grams, it's size is 106.5 x 53.9 x 17.2 mm. The display has a diagonal of 2.8", it's resolution is QVGA (240 x 320 pixels), I just cannot say anything negative about image quality, it can be read perfectly in sunlight, no pixels can be seen, I don't feel that it's not as good as Nokia N95's 2.6" screen. The materials used and the assembly are both high quality, you won't feel that it "collpases" in your hands like in the case of the Finnish model I have just mentioned. With some exaggeration I could say that it's perfect, but as we know such a thing doesn't exist.

I have been asked what are the grey buttons on the front good for (those that have no lables). The left one opens the menu, the right one is for the gallery, these cannot be configured, but the two softkeys above them can have their functions set - even though only on the standby screen as in the applications they have preset functions, they usually bring up the menu. There are two programmable keys on the numeric pad too, these are labeled M1 and M2, I think the M refers to multimedia. These open the music player and RealPlayer by default, but we can assign anything to them.

The operating system is the latest Symbian S60, which means 9.3 with Feature Pack 2. It's very spectacular, there are nice fades and animations as eye-candy, but screen rotation is not as fancy as for example on i900. There are basically no problems with speed, although I have observed slowdowns sometimes, but these are evidently due to the beta software.

There are a lot of programs, as you can see on the screenshots: name card digitizer, QuickOffice family, ZIP, PDF reader; these are the most important ones, but I would also like to note that all have a nice icon that fits the overall picture. We are quite fine with games too, FIFA 08 and Asphalt 3 are installed and these are N-Gage games, both are really great. There is no absence of multimedia features either, the handset supports DivX movies, the image viewer is darn fast and the music player can be familiar from older Symbian smartphones, it knows everything it should. I would like to emphasize the high quality of the stereo speakers, there isn't much bass, but besides this they are clear and loud, which is a great thing.

That's all for now, I'm awaiting questions in the forum!
