The SD Association has created a new standard, called SDXC. Phones have only started supporting SDHC cards, but SD Association goes even further by creating the standard for the next five years.
SDXC cards have the same physical size as previous SDs, but their capacity starts from 64 GB and they can be as large as 2 terabytes. At the same time data transfer speed is increased as well, which has been achieved by changing the file structure. Instead of the previous FAT32 file system, SDXC uses exFAT, so speed can be as high as 300 megabytes/second.
The question is when will the new cards be launched. According to the company's spokesperson the first 64 GB large SDXC cards shoule become available next year, and SD Association expects them to spread in digital cameras and video recorders first, the phone being the next targets. The launch of 2 TB SDXC cards is planned in five years.
