Motorola: Goodbye MOTOMAGX and UIQ

Hirdetés

After reporting about Q3 financial results, Sanjay Jha, co-CEO of Motorola and head of the mobile phone department has confirmed the rumors about their company not manufacturing any more Symbian UIQ and MOTOMAGX handsets. The reasons for the decision are evidently the economies they have to put in effect after the poor quartlerly financial results, as both UIQ and both their propritary Linux-based Java platform required lots of money for development. Sony Ericsson has also abandoned the development of Symbian UIQ phones recently, thus preparing for the unified user interface from Symbian Foundation, which has both Sony Ericsson and Motorola as active members. Sanjay Jha has emphasized that in the future they are focusing only on Windows Mobile and Android solutions and in the low-end category they will be using their own P2K platform and the solutions from their ODM partners. The first Android-based Motorola phone is expceted only by late 2009, right after the first WM 6.5 handset. The head of the mobile phone department has also reported that separating the networking and mobile phone departments is not possible in the current financial situation, so this will be postponed.
