One of the world's largest display manufacturers, LG Display, surprises the world with a 6" ellipse-shaped and a 1.4" circle-shaped TFT display. Both screens are capable of displaying 262 thousand colors and have a viewing angle of 160 degrees. Although we could have seen such phones earlier that have an external display with a shape that differs from the conventional ones (for example Sony Ericsson Z200), but these were in fact angular displays, the cover hiding the necessary parts. LG's new displays, however, are really circle- and oval-shaped, so one can build real circular devices based on them. The circle-shaped has a diameter of 35.5 mm, while the oval one has a size of 131.4 x 78.8 mm. These displays could be used on car dashboards having oval displays, in digital picture viewers, in phones, watched and other similar devices. The possibility of creating devices with much more interesting shapes is now here. The first prototypes will be displayed at the 2008 Society for Information Display (SID) exposition in Los Angeles on May 18.
