Iris recognition, based on conventional cameras is not a new idea, as OKI has been already experimenting with it. The point of the solution is that instead of complicated fundus scanning with infrared cameras, the iris is scanned with conventional video-call cameras built in mobile phones. As opposed to fingerprint recognition, this solution requires no special device to be embedded, the only prerequisite is the presence of a high quality secondary camera. LG has recently started licensing the technology from Iridian Technologies, so the new type of security solution is expected to be launched in Europe by the Korean manufacturer.
