When rating their financial results, Tim Cook, Apple's interim CEO has said that rivalry on the market is very important as this lets all manufacturers to develop and to create something new, and he has also emphasized that they will protect their patents from all products that copy the manufacturer's solutions. At the press conference a journalist has asked if this sentence is about Palm Pré, but the president answered that he has been talking only in general. Of course the whole thing is not that simple, as John Rubinstein, once the leader of Apple's hardware department, is now at Palm, knowing the manufacturer's products, solutions and development methods. Palm, however, took over not only managers, but engineers as well, so when making Pré they had a number of employees who have been previously working on iPhone's development. According to Lynn Fox, spokesperson at Palm, their company is not copying, as they have launched a completely new product, and she has also emphasized that they are not afraid of a possible patent lawsuit, as Palm has patented lots of solutions during their successful and innovative years and they are ready to protect their products by all means necessary. According to analysts a possible Apple-Palm war would have a serious effect on both companies, as due to the complicated American software patent system Palm could have more and more such small patented solutions that would make Apple's life terrbile if they would like to dish them.
