Like two eggs
Both gadgets were designed with an egg (potato?) in mind. Tibo is a bit more rounded, and the shiny plastic finish has somewhat the impression of a cheap, low-quality product, it reminds me of old-timer portable consoles. This feeling is further enhanced by the joystick on the left. There are two blue status LEDs on the sides, while best part of Tibo is the huge shading panel, which makes the display somewhat readable even in bright sunlight.
As opposed to this, zümo looks much more like industrial, professional stuff, its metallic cover and square-like-shape fit the design of Garmin car navis very well. Zümo’s controls are on the side panel, which is covered in rubber. This might seem a good idea at first, but Tibor found the Tibo to be easier to use in biker gloves. Garmin has no shading panel, as they have probably trusted in the legendary display, but in bright sunlight even the outstanding Garmin screen became barely readable.
A common characteristic of both devices is that the system connectors (both are miniUSB) and the memory card slot are on the bottom. On Tibo we can access these only after opening a small panel, and so – even though both devices are water resistant – Xroad offers a solution that seems safer. Both PNAs can be fastened rock solid to the bike, but a common aspect (and not flaw) of them is that they cannot be installed on every bike, as there is simply not enough room.
The gadgets come with different accessories. Garmin packed a neat little case to the device instead of a charger, but the problem is that they have also omitted the headset, but without it zümo is just not the real thing (it won’t play back any sound), it immediately screams for a Bluetooth accessory. Tibo, however, included a wired headset (but it also supports Bluetooth communication), there is a case too, but there’s not only a darn USB cable in the pack, as in the case of Garmin, as they’ve also packed a not too expensive charger. A fine thing is that we get a TMC antenna with both devices, which can be connected to the bike. Another welcome feature is that we can connect the navis to the bike’s power source.
