World's largest manufacturer Nokia will, from now on, buy displays only from partners that are developing AMOLED (Active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) screens too. According to the Finnish manufacturer the future is evidently in the low-consumption AMOLED panels that have a superior image quality, even though they haven't used such a display in any of their models (note: 7900 Prism and 8800 Arte have PMOLED screens). According to market analysts the Finnish giant considers it important that their partners are engaged in future technology research, as they are aiming for long-term cooperation.
Nokia's current two largest partners are AU Optronics and TPO Display have already taken the first steps. AU Optronics have cancelled AMOLED research two years ago, as they were too expensive, but they have now again considered restarting research. L.J. Chen, President and COO, has emphasized that all technical requirements for OLED screen manufacturing have been fulfilled, so they can practically restart it at any time. TPO Display also has an AMOLED developer team, but they would start mass production only in case there would be demand for it. Currently Samsung SDI and Chi Mei EL manufacture small AMOLED panels for portable devices, while TMDisplay is expected to start mass production in next October.
