Nokia introduces a new naming scheme

First Nokia gave only four-digit numbers as names for its handsets, but these didn't say very much about the features of the phone to most customers. The recently introduced "classic", "fold", "slide", "Navigator" and "XpressMusic" brands give some hints about the design, but only the "Nseries" and "Eseries" names tell something about the technical specs, as one can know for sure that these use Symbian Series 60 and have advanced multimedia or business features.

On the occasion of Nokia World 09, due early September, the company will officially announce its Xseries and Cseries brands and the currently used Eseries and Nseries brands are to be redefined, thus further helping customers in making a decision, as they will know for sure about each model what key features it has. For example all future Eseries models will feature WLAN support, an advanced email client, hardware encryption and predefined business functions. Xeries is expected to be the place for the models currently called XpressMusic and this will surely have a 3.5 mm headset jack.

The first digit of the new model numbers will still tell how high is the product's category, while the other digits will serve as a simple model number. It is not yet known whether the other words used for describing the design ("classic", "fold" and "slide") will still be in use, but they hopefully won't be abandoned, as using these not only the features, but the form factor could also be determined from the model name. According to market analysts a naming scheme that clearly describes the handset's features is highly important, so Sony Ericsson's new models without any model number, like Satio, Yari and Aino, could be very deceiving. Samsung, LG and Motorola have no clear model naming scheme either, but it seems they don't really want to change that.
