N78 Product Manager answers our questions

Our site has received an invite to an online conference where the Product Manager of Nokia N78 has answered questions from the press. The conference has been organized by womworld/Nokia at Tangler, while the list of invited people has included such websites like allaboutsymbian.com, or iGadgetLife. There has been a great atmosphere during the whole four hour long discussion, we have received answers to lots of our questions, for example details of the upcoming software update have been discussed.

According to the plans the manufacturer is planning to refine the NaviWheel, in order to avoid mispresses. Nokia has already been heavily testing this feature and they have concluded that every person needs a different amount of time to get used to handling this input method, so they have tried to choose the golden mean. Regarding the phone's 13 mm thickness (which has been considered a bit too much by some participants), the Product Manager told us that the main reason for this is the camera behind the display.

Compared to the first models they have already modified the phone's back, in order to make users feel it stable and easy to take off at the same time. N78 still has the older version of Nokia Maps, which has very simple reasons: during the phone's development this has been the latest available version, but anyone can download the new one. At last it has been revealed that N78 can play back music for 24 hours officially, but not even the Product Manager could tell the handset's uptime during FM transmission.

There is a reason for the speakers being placed on the two opposite sides of the phone. The manufacturer's goal was to place the speakers as far from each other as possible, in order to have a much better stereo effect. The designers at Nokia have been thinking a lot about including a xenon flash or not, but finally they have decided to omit it, due to size restrictions.

We have also asked why is Nokia asking extra money for voice navigation (which is usually not the case when buying navigation software). The Product Manager told us that the software is free, but since not all users need or want to use navigation, they have decided to ask a separate price for this feature, thus lowering the price of the phone.

There have been questions about design too, as the keypad has been a controversial topic in case of N78. Nokia tried to reach the best compromise, in order to not to degrade the elegant, flat design in favor of usability. N78 will soon be available in white too, although there are no pictures available of it yet. There have been lots of other minor observations and questions and N78's Product Manager has promised to answer these later on. We will publish any information regarding these matters as soon as we receive the answers.
