In the picture below you can see an illustration from Motorola's patent request, which sketches the operation of mobile phones with flexible display. It is clearly visible in the picture, that Motorola's idea is nothing else than the improvement of the concept of standard clamshell phones and openable communicator type designs in a way that in the place of the upper flip there is a rollable display. Motorola has been already trying new types of display technologies before. The Motorola F3, for example, was based on an extremely low consumption electronic ink, which couldn't become a successful cheap model only because its segmented display with a disastrous layout. The market of flexible displays is quite small: there are only prototypes of color displays and monochrome ones have a low resolution. The solution outlined by Motorola is expected to not to be implemented in the near future.
