This is not the first case for a company to launch a credit card-sized DVD, but the pairing of DVD and SIM is a completely new idea. The advantage of the technology presented by Gemalto is that it replaces the unused part of the old, large SIM with a detachable small DVD, which has a storage capacity of 50 MB that is enough for most network providers to put the necessary drivers, manuals and other software on it. The first such SIM-DVD combo will be available at Italian Wind. Gemalto has been planning a 128 MB SIM in 2005 for France Telecom, but the lack of a standard interface has made the project impossible.
