CSR demonstrated in San Francisco their working BlueCore7 dual mode Bluetooth solution, which can communicate with both Bluetooth 2.1 and Bluetooth Low Energy (previously Ultra Low Power Bluetooth or Wibree) radio protocols at the same time. During the demonstration a Java application, running on a modified phone, displayed data measured by a nearby balance and a thermometer. The thermometer was wontinuously broadcasting data, while the balance activated the Bluetooth chip at the press of a button and then it sent the result in a simple package. Bluetooth Low Energydoesn't require preliminary pairing, it doesn't use complicated encryption, but it works only at a short range. The aim of the solution is to provide simple data transfer between compact devices while using the least amount of energy. The new technology uses only 3 frequencies instead of 32, which is enough for reliable functioning and it requires less energy than the usual Bluetooth solutions. According to Bluetooth SIG the first low wnergy consumption Bluetooth solutions are expected by the beginning of 2009.
