Introduction, packaging
This is sacrilege! I believe that Nokia just can’t observe that they have thousands of four-digit model names that they didn’t use yet, but to tell the truth I could say such a number anytime, just for example. I also believe that it’s great for business to re-use the numbers of old, once renown models just to add a couple of words and name a new handset. But this is far too much: to name a Series 40 fashion phone 6600 Fold is more than insolence. I’d like to quickly inform our surprised readers that Nokia 6600 was a Symbian smartphone, we could say it was the pioneer of high-end handsets, one of the first of its kind and of those that got widely spread. And now… they give this name to a fashion phone? Where is consistency?
The original Nokia 6600
So this newcomer has nothing to do with its predecessor, this is a magnetically locking clamshell which is a fashion phone. We have received it from XXL GSM, the box also included a charger, a data cable a stereo headset made of two parts (AD-83 and HS-83), a 512 MB microSD card and a case.
Exterior, magnet
6600 fold is the type of handset which has a price that is hard to tell at first. It looks nice, and demanding, but the picture changes when you take it in your hands, there are joint problems, screeching, which – we must say – is quite a shame for a handset that costs €290 EUR; practically the Finnish manufacturer is the only one who dares to launch such a poorly assembled handset in this price category. The phone, by the way, is not small, it’s 87.7 x 44 x 15.9 mm large and weighs 110 grams, which I also couldn’t judge, it seems lighter.
The front has a shiny, gradient finish which covers an OLED screen with a diagonal of 1.36” and a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels. There are no buttons, but the part above the display is touch-sensitive, which practically can be used only for denying/muting incoming calls. Otherwise the display gets lit at double-tap, but it cannot be used for lots of things, it displays time or the track that is played back, but a couple of other features could have been implemented. There is a Nokia logo surrounded by a brushed surface on top of the front and there is a pulsating LED below it, but this doesn’t blink only when there is a missed event, it’s flashing continuously instead. Well, why not – of course it can be turned off.
The external display
The back has quite a lame design, it can be snapped off, and – as I have already mentioned – it screeches a lot. The 2 megapixel camera with fixed focus and a LED flash are on the top, the resolution is not written anywhere. A bit below we can see a metallic part which is only a design element.
There is nothing on top, on the right there is the charger connector and the open button for the fold. Yes, a dedicated button for opening the phone! We can rarely see such a thing, I’ve been playing around with it quite a lot, it’s great fun. 6600 fold closes magnetically and it’s opened with the help of a spring – if we press the button on the right the magnet is “disabled” for a short time and the spring opens the phone. If we don’t let the fold to open during pressing the button, we get to see the message on the picture above: Open fold manually. We can open it by hand too, it needs no hard effort and thanks to the gap you can see below we can do it with one hand.
The data cable connector is on the left, it’s microUSB. There are no volume control keys, this annoyed me a lot, I can’t understand why they aren’t here.
When opening the phone we can stare at the QVGA OLED screen with a diagonal of 2.13”. Quality is great, but its brightness seems lower than on a TFT, due to the technology used, but it’s no big deal. There is a VGA secondary camera and image sensor in the top left corner, while above the screen there is the phone speaker that has the magnet embedded. The keypad is on the bottom half, I didn’t like it at all, as the buttons (besides the ones in the center, matter column) are slippery and their size and pressure point are not good either, which is even more true to the five-way navigation pad. The other magnet is on the bottom with the handsfree speaker underneath it.
Menu, software
This is the part that I cannot write much new about: latest Series 40, completely like on the other previously reviewed dozens of similar handsets, those who are interested in an in-depth review or those who don’t really know what’s it all about should check out our article about this platform. The new 6600 is completely average in terms of speed, it’s not fast, it’s not slow, and it does its work in a stable and reliable manner. The menu system has a grid layout by default, it has 3 x 3 icons and there are 8 themes, we could have seen all of them previously.
The organizer functions have nothing new about them, there is an easy to use calendar with moth, week and day views, an alarm clock that works even when the phone is turned off, a to-do list, a notepad, a calculator, a stopwatch, a countdown timer and as a bonus there is a Chinese-English dictionary too. This is of course included only because this handset came to us from Asia.
There are six games on the phone: Backgammon, Golf Tour, Highroller Casino, Rally 3D, Snake III, Sudoku. The list of applications includes a converter, Messenger, Opera Mini, Presenter, world clock and WidSets. This list can be expanded with other Java applications, which can be installed on the 15 MB internal memory or the memory card. Regarding this last one I have to note that the memory card slot is under the battery, so we have to turn off the phone in order to swap out the card, which is not a great thing to do.
Phone calls, data transfer
There are basically no problems with phone calls, but the lack of volume control keys was very annoying, at least for me. Of course no one should be afraid, we can set the volume with the d-pad, but this is not such a user-friendly solution. The GSM module is quad-band (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and the handset supports third generation networks too. We can use GPRS, EDGE or 384 kbps UMTS for data transfer, Bluetooth and microUSB are of version 2.0.
Software regarding phone calls are all default ones. The capacity of the phonebook is unknown, it can probably store 2000 or 4000 names, and there are lots of extra fields too. The call log can display received/missed/dialed calls together or separately. SMS memory size is also unknown, but it’s sure that 6600 supports multimedia messages and emails too, the email client handles IMAP and SMTP servers too.
Multimedia
The main camera has a resolution of 2 megapixels and fixed focus, the highest available resolution is 1600 x 1200 pixels. The software is not very advanced, we can choose between landscape and portrait modes (so we can keep the phone anyway we want to), we can set white balance, JPEG compression and there are effects and self-timer. To my greatest surprise the pictures are completely different than those taken with phones with a similar camera from the same manufacturer, a very high noise filter level, high noise levels, soft (blurred) corners and a relatively good edge sharpness are characteristic, so on the whole they have a quite poor quality.
Video recording, however, is surprisingly good: they can be recorded in VGA resolution too, even though speed is only 15 fps in this case. The most interesting thing is that the camera when recording videos, has a completely different view angle than it should, it is around 75 mm if converted to the microfilm system, so it’s as if we would set 2X-3X zoom on a simple digital camera. No, it’s no digital zoom, it’s just simply like this. Here’s a test video.
Fold is not bet in music: we get an AD-83 microUSB microUSB -> 3.5 mm converter that even has all kinds of buttons. This is in which we have to plug the HS-83 headset, which is an earpiece with a great sound quality, we get three sets of rubber pieces, so it will surely fit our ears. The phone is no too good in handsfree, the music player has nothing new either, but it doesn’t even have to, since it’s already great. It can sort tracks by album, artist and genre, it can display album covers, and it can run in the background, so it’s okay. It’s funny that when the handset is closed the currently played track’s title and length is displayed on the external screen to, but we cannot seek. The new 6600 has an FM radio too, there’s not much to talk about it, it works.
Other, summary
The battery has a capacity of 860 mAh, it can be replaced. Thanks to the OLED screen the handset takes it for three days with one charge, at least that’s how long it was online at me.
Summary: I really don’t know what to say about the new 6600 and not only because this is its name. Here is an “innovative” fashion phone with a cool design, which finally brings something new: magnetic lock, opened with a spring – okay, it’s not a breakthrough, but it’s still something that we couldn’t really see before. We also have an OLED display, which is also good and the headset is also a high quality one, but I think that’s the end of the list of positive features. On the other hand we have price-tag of €290 EUR, which is a great problem on its own and the phone is also poorly assembled, which is… really a shame for a handset at such a price. If you want your phone to open at the press of a button go and buy a 6600 fold. But no one else.
