Asus has successfully stirred up some water on the market of ultraportable devices when they have launched their cheap Eee laptop, that weighs only 1 kg. The notebook that has been launched at a price of $400 USD is a serious opponent for smartphones, as it provides a number of bonus features at a larger size, but with a larger keyboard and a 7" or 10" display, with the price being sometimes lowe than a smartphone's. Qualcomm has evidently identified these cheap mini notebooks as an opponent, and they think that only Windows Mobile 7-based devices will be capable of being a real opponent for them. These will of course won't be able to run conventional PC applications, but they will much more look like desktop operating systems than their earlier versions. It's important to mention that mini notebooks are built on low power consumption CPUs, but those are not near as effective than mobile processors, that were originally designed for low-consumption, and mobile operating systems. Below you can see one of Qualcomm's weapons, the QWERTY communicator that has a 1 GHz ARM CPU, 3G support and that costs only $299 USD. There are a couple of months of wait left until it will be launched, as the communicator is expected to be announced as a product at CES 2009.
