According to the latest analysis from market researcher Berg Insight, the next widespread standard of the cell phone industry will be WLAN. The number of phones with a WLAN module is in a constant increase. In 2007 there were more than 27 million such devices, but this number increases by 71.5% year by year, so by 2012 there might be a total of 400 million phones that support WLAN on the market. This technology is primarily used for home and office fast internet access, file transfer and photo or video sharing. According to market analyst André Malm, network operators do not consider WLAN as an income-decreasig factor anymore, due to the spreading of packets with a fixed monthly fee. In these cases the operator comes off better if the customer uses local access points when possible, as the congestion and slowdown of the telecommunication network is thus avoided. Berg Insight analysed the spreading of other transfer technologies too. According to the analysis the spreading of the short-range NFC will be slow. Although in 2007 there were already 35 million such devices on the market, with the average 43.8% growth rate there still we be only 215 million such devices by 2012, while UWB is expected to spread even slower. Before 2010 there is not even a 1% market coverage expected.
