  You can't really reload in the sense of adding more shells. Most GI's would just "burn" the ammo (fire it off at a target worth shooting) and replace with new M1 clip. What is being done in the game is a removal of the clip with remaining shells and the inserting of a full load. This could be done, but was time consuming and very rare. This is with the fact that men with Garands didnt really storm buildings and had "time" (i use the term loosely) to burn off and reload. The benefit to this however was that Germans quickly learned the "Empty" PING of the M1 and would use it to gauge when to attack. This was quickly countered by GI's who lured many germans to their astonished "full M1 garand facing" deaths.
