Samsung has announced M8800 (codename Pixon) premium category handset two weeks ago. After some organization (and with the help of Samsung Mobile Hungary) we have managed to acquire a non-final handset.
The review will take some more time, but Pixon already came in its final packaging, so we hereby present our first unboxing video, where you can see a short demo of the phone unpacking, the accessories and the phone. (It's damn hard to unpack with one hand and keep the camera with the other.)
Pixon is based on F480, it has a large touchscreen and only three buttons on the front. There are of course keys on the sides, we can see the HOLD button (keylock), the camera, the multimedia and the quick menu hotkeys and the microSD slot, Samsung's proprietary data connector and the volume control keys. The list of accessories includes a headset made of two parts, so we're not annoyed that much by the lack of a 3.5 mm connector, but we would have been really happy with a normal miniUSB port.
The menu system is based on widgets, just like the one we have seen on F480, but we have much more apps over here that can be put on-screen and we can also download new ones. What we have observed at first: the system is faster than on F480, this can be seen even when rotating the screen.
The image browser is updated, it can display our photos in various layouts and we can browser them by tilting the phone. Pixon won't lag over here either, everything happens instantly. There is not much new to be done in terms of music playback, there is an FM radio, "music recognition" and an MP3 player which brings good sound quality even via the handsfree.
The back is made of metal, it has an 8 megapixel camera on it; I took lots of photos with it during the weekend, but I would like to emphasize that the software is not final, so - if all goes well - image quality might get better. Pixon can also record 720 x 480 pixels large videos.
