''MotoGP: French Event Under Threat?
Safety concerns at Le Mans
by staff
Saturday, May 14, 2005
There are reports in certain sections of the European press today that suggest the Grand Prix of France may be suspended if the rain is persistently heavy prior to the three races getting underway tomorrow.
With water yesterday sitting on the surface of the tarmac at the end of the main straight, and with ''mud'' apparently trickling onto the racing line at turns seven and eight, safety quickly became an issue.
Several riders are reported to have concerns and are questioning the validity of running the event should more rain soak the Le Mans track overnight and early tomorrow.
The drainage at the circuit isn't the best and several of the 250cc riders ran off the track yesterday during their second practice session after ''aquaplaning'' at the end of the main straight.
San Marinese rider Alex DeAngelis and Swedish racer Frederik Watz both fell during the rain lashed 250cc session due to standing water.
Spanish rider Alex Debon also had a heart in mouth moment when his Honda hit the soaked section at the end of the main straight at some 212kph. The rider commenting that it felt like his wheels were ''floating'' across the water.
Reigning MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi was reported as stating that the situation is dangerous and should further heavy rain fall on Sunday morning, they could see a legitimate call for the suspension of the event.
The track was wet this morning during the free practice sessions although, at present, the track is drying for the three qualifying sessions this afternoon.
According to the local weather forecasts, there is an 80% chance of rain tonight and on Sunday. The 125cc race is due to get underway at 11am local time with MotoGP morning warm-up at 9.45am.
If the weather deteriorates, the riders safety committee and Race Control will be watching the situation closely. We hope the rain gods do their dance elsewhere.
